Tune Up Your Bow Before Bow Season

Summer is almost here which means bow season is right around the corner. Now is the best time to start thinking about bow season. One mistake many bowhunters make is waiting until the middle or end of summer to get their bow ready for season. The best time to get a bow tuned up and ready to go is now. Pro shops are slower this time of year which means they can quickly get a bow ready for archery season. Below are a few things to consider when getting a bow tuned up.

Most bowhunters have a tendency to put off having new strings and cables put on their bow. If an archer shoots a lot, strings and cables should be replaced every couple of years. If strings and cables break while in the woods, the hunt is over and it could be days before the bow has been repaired and is ready for the woods again. New strings and cables can add a few feet per second to a bow and make the bow quieter because when new strings and cables are added, often everything on the bow gets tightened up. 

Even if a bow doesn’t need new strings and cables, putting on a new string loop before deer season is always a good idea. String loops often break at the absolute worst times.  Replacing a string loop a few months before season opens is one way to eliminate a possible headache come opening day.

The summer is a great time to get pick up new arrows. Every bowhunter loses arrows, breaks arrows and rips the fletching off arrows from time to time. I can’t tell you how many times I have waited until a week before season to build new arrows or fix the fletching on arrows. The best time to purchase and tune new arrows is when there is no rush. Getting arrows tuned can take a bit of time, so purchasing new arrows two to three months before opening day is always a good idea.

Summer is also a great time to put a new bow sight or arrow rest on a bow. Bowhunters should head to a local pro shop and try out a few new models. It is surprising how a new bow sight can shrink a bowhunters arrow groups. Over the years, companies refine pins by making them brighter, smaller and easier to adjust. As a result, a simple sight upgrade can help a bowhunter increase accuracy.

A bow tune up and a few new accessories can really help a bowhunter shoot more accurately. New bows are extremely expensive so instead of buying a new bow this summer, consider a bow tune up.
