The Hybrid Broadhead Advantage

The Hybrid Broadhead Advantage

Most bowhunters have a favorite go-to broadhead. Some bowhunters prefer a razor-sharp, cut-on contact fixed blade head that has a small cutting diameter but will likely pass completely through an animal, offering both an entrance and an exit wound.

Some bowhunters prefer a mechanical broadhead that creates a large wound channel and an enormous blood trail which can really make a big difference especially when a marginal shot is made.  Another reason many bowhunters prefer a mechanical head is because they fly very similar to a field point.

One broadhead that gets overlooked by many bowhunters but shouldn’t is a hybrid broadhead. A hybrid broadhead is a fixed blade and a mechanical broadhead. Most hybrid broadheads have two fixed blades and two mechanical blades. This type of broadhead creates an enormous entrance would and if by chance the mechanical blades fail, there are still two fixed blades that can easily kill almost any big game animal.

The combined cutting surface of most hybrid broadheads is larger that almost any mechanical head on the market so bowhunters who are looking for a large cutting diameter head will be pleased with a hybrid head.

The beauty of a hybrid head is in most cases the fixed blades are offer a small cutting diameter which flies extremely well, even out of super fast bows. When you combine the cutting surface of the fixed blade and the mechanical blades, you end up with a very large cutting diameter. For instance, the Grim Reaper Broadheads Hybrid head has a 2-blade fixed blade that has a 1-3/16” cutting diameter and two mechanical blades that offer 1.5” cutting diameter. Together, that is a total cutting surface of 2.69 inches.

My son recently shot a buck with this broadhead and the entrance hole was the size of a pop can. My son is only pulling 60 pounds and the broadhead completely passed through the buck he shot.

Broadheads are always a hot topic in hunting circles. The next time you and your buddies are trying out new broadheads, don’t be afraid to give a hybrid broadhead a try. They truly are the best of both worlds.
